Australians divided over OS-trained doctors

Submitted by on March 23, 2010 No Comment

doctors-3Australians are divided over importing overseas-trained doctors as an answer to the practitioner shortage, with almost half of the belief that we should not recruit doctors from overseas.

The 42% who believe we should recruit from overseas, are supported by a similar proportion (38%) who state they don’t mind where their doctor was trained.

However, for one in five, comfort with seeing an overseas-trained doctor hinges on the country or region they were trained in. Africa fares the worst, with 44% of the belief that they’re of lower standard than Australian-trained practitioners. One-third held the same belief for doctors trained in Asia.
